I attended the NHSBCD conference in Louisville this past July.  Our organization was looking for ideas on how to strengthen our body, promote and enhance basketball in the Palmetto state.  Not having any expectations of this newly formed group, I was very impressed at the quality of folks involved and how quickly they have moved this group forward. must mention that the hospitality was excellent by the Kentucky Basketball Coaches Association and that Louisville is a great city to visit. It is well worth the time and money for leaders of basketball coaches in all states to attend the conference.

North Carolina’s membership and involvement in the NHSBCD has helped our state organization tremendously. Each year I look forward to the summer meeting of the NHSBCD. I have been going to these for many years (back when we just met with midwest directors) and each year I come away with some new ideas that can help our association. Every state association is at a different level of evolvement. Some have been around for over 50 years, others over 30, and others are just getting started. Why reinvent the wheel? Any new association is going through what we have all encountered. What a great time, money and energy savings when a new state association can show up and learn how to accomplish their goals without trial and error. I hope that new basketball coaches associations will meet with us since our group is willing to share our expertise.

State Basketball Organizations can ally with NHSBCD

The National High School Basketball Coaches Directors is an organization

of the leaders of State Basketball Coaches Associations.  It is basically an alliance between the various State Basketball Coaches Associations. There are no individual memberships. 

1.         The leader or a delegate from each state basketball specific coaches association should ally with the NHSBCD.  There is strength in numbers!

2.         If you coach in a state that does not have a basketball specific coaches association we can help you form one. 

3.         If you coach in a state that has a general organization for coaches association of all sports we welcome your participation as well.  The overall coaches association in your state might have a basketball coaches committee and would provide a representative to the NHSBCD.  The leadership of the overall general coaches organization in any state that does not also have a basketball specific organization is encouraged to provide a representative to the NHSBCD.

State Basketball Leaders Comment on NHSBCD

The development of this committee is the single greatest step I have seen in 20 years of coaching towards the improvement and protection of High School basketball. As high school coaches, we are the true “Guardians” of the game of basketball. Real pure basketball that has not been tainted by the pull of generating revenue. The NHSBCD will provide a tremendous opportunity for coached to network throughout the country and to have a voice in issues that concern the high school game.

I was most impressed with the number of states that have organized and functioning associations. We tend to live in our own little boundaries without much regard for what others are doing. I learned that many states are doing what Missouri has done for years and in several cases much more. Things that we do not do that other states are doing and other items include: Summer Camps; Showcase events; rule experiments and changes; much higher pay for Executive Directors; much larger budgets; more fund raising for Coaches vs Cancer; Legends Clinic; free Web Site construction; additional sponsorship names; Coaches Assist funds; NABC interest in High School Coaches; make up of the National Federation Rules Committee.

The meeting of the coaches association representatives was extremely beneficial for our coaches in Tennessee.  Our association is looking to implement several of the ideas we picked up at the meeting.  We are still a new association and found it very helpful to talk to other state representative’s about increasing membership, handling all-star games, as well as other member’s views pertaining to the positives of our game as well as the areas where we can improve. It was great to initiate the contact with the NABC as well as share our concerns with the NFHS.

I am both excited an enthusiastic after having the opportunity to meet with the representatives from many other states. The Kentucky hosts were terrific and certainly a group of advocates that display both class and hospitality to the highest degree. They made me feel welcome! Our Massachusetts Basketball Coaches Association will meet and I will present what i have learned. I hope that I can contribute more in the future as the Association grows and becomes more proactive.
